You know what AI is and roughly how it works. Now it’s time to get good at using it. This hands-on course turns understanding into everyday skill: writing clear requests, getting useful drafts, learning faster, researching carefully, planning your life, and handing off multi-step tasks, all while protecting your privacy and your judgement.

What you will learn

  • A simple, repeatable method for writing prompts that get good results
  • How to use AI to draft, edit and summarize while keeping your own voice
  • How to learn new subjects and research questions with AI, and how to check what it tells you
  • How to use AI for planning, decisions and everyday problem-solving
  • How AI tools, agents and reusable instructions can save you time
  • How to stay safe, protect your information and use AI honestly

Who this course is for

Anyone who uses, or wants to use, AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot: students, parents, job seekers, retirees, small business owners and professionals. It works best after How AI Works: A Plain-Language Introduction, but you can take it on its own.

How the course works

Six lessons, each with three short topics and a 5-question quiz. Every topic includes a “Try it yourself” exercise. You will learn far more by doing these than by reading alone, so keep an AI assistant open in another tab. Any major assistant’s free version is enough. A final assessment checks your skills at the end. Plan on 3 to 4 hours including exercises.

A note on tools

AI products change quickly, and menus and feature names vary between apps. This course teaches skills that work across tools rather than button-by-button instructions for any one product.
