AI is changing how we work, learn, get information and relate to each other. It is also the subject of some of the loudest debates of our time. Some people say AI will cure diseases and end drudgery; others warn of mass unemployment, misinformation or even catastrophe. Most of us are left wondering what to believe.

This course won’t tell you what to think. It will help you think clearly: how to read AI news critically, what the evidence actually shows so far, where informed people genuinely disagree and why, and how you can have a say in how AI shapes your community and your country.

What you will learn

  • How to separate hype, fear and evidence in AI news and claims
  • What research shows so far about AI and jobs, and how to prepare
  • How AI is affecting learning, thinking and childhood
  • How AI affects truth, trust, elections and relationships
  • The environmental costs, the questions of power and fairness, and the debate over advanced AI risk
  • How AI is being regulated around the world and how individuals and communities can take part

How this course is different

This is a thinking course. Each topic includes a “Different perspectives” box summarizing where thoughtful people disagree, and a discussion question to reflect on, write about, or discuss with others in a forum, classroom or community group. Quizzes test your understanding of the evidence and the arguments, never which side is “right.”

Who this course is for

Anyone who wants to understand the bigger picture: citizens, parents, educators, workers, community leaders and decision-makers. It works best after How AI Works, but no technical knowledge is required. Plan on 3 to 4 hours, plus time for discussion.

A note on currency: facts about laws, research and events are current as of October 2026. AI moves quickly, so each lesson lists sources you can check for updates.
